In the first part of this series of articles I had the pleasure of introducing you to a possible business venture for landowners. This venture, partly commercial and partly philanthropic is the provision of allotments close to a village, town, or city.

For a country that promotes itself as the Emerald Isle, Ireland has been found badly wanting where the provision of allotments are concerned. This is very apparent when we consider what small quantities of plots our city and county councils throughout the land provide.

When I think back, allotments always seemed to me to be a typically English pursuit. I always pictured a Jack Duckworth type character from Manchester’s Coronation Street using his allotment for the dual purposes of cultivating cabbages, whilst enjoying some quality time away from his wife Vera. However, my thoughts have changed in past years as I have seen an upsurge of interest in allotment growing right here in Ireland.
